Submitting Your Play
What are we looking for?
We are looking for writers that want to write for theatre and recognise the opportunities of live performance in a theatre space with an audience present.
We want new plays from writers of all ages. The writer need not be 'young' but if the voice is refreshing or bold or if the play is delivered with power or rigour, poetry or wit then we'll take notice.
We also want to present the important stories and perspectives that you feel are not getting on to other stages.
Please note that we accept unsolicited script submissions from UK based writers only.
How do I submit a play?
Please note we have recently changed our policy and no longer accept unsolicited plays from writers based outside of the UK. We only accept plays we have requested from writers based outside of the UK via agents.
All plays should be sent as a hard copy directly to the literary department at Hampstead Theatre. You should send the whole play, not an extract or opening scenes. We will only consider full length plays (50 pages or more) sent to us.
The script should be type-written and printed in a clear font, with the pages numbered. It can be single or double-spaced but please make sure it is presented in a format that is easy to read.
Please enclose a short synopsis and covering letter telling us a little about yourself and the play.
Please make sure you include an email address so that we can acknowledge your play. If you do not include or do not have an email address your play will not be acknowledged. You are welcome to call the literary department directly on 020 7449 4184 if you have not included an email address but wish to know your play has arrived. Please allow at least two weeks from sending the script to ensure we have time to receive and log the play in to our system.
If you wish to have your play returned please include a stamped address envelope. We aim to read all plays within four months and so your script will be returned after that period of time if it has not been successful. All plays without postage will be recycled. For other frequently ask questions click here.
Please only send one play at any one time. We do not have the space to accept multiple submissions and we will contact you if we wish to read anything further.
Please take a look at our frequently asked questions for any further queries. If the answer you are looking for doesn't appear there please email literary@hampsteadtheatre.com and we will do our best to provide you with the answer you need.
Please include an equal opportunities form with your play.
Plays and equal opportunities forms should be sent to:
