About Us

Hampstead Theatre’s literary department is the first port of call for all writers. We receive well over a thousand scripts a year, all of which are considered for production at the theatre. Working alongside the Literary Manager is a dedicated team of script readers who help us discover the scripts and writers that we think should be heard and programmed.

We receive scripts from all over the world however we only accept unsolicited plays from writers based in the UK. We don’t offer feedback on plays unless we are actively taking them in to production. If you wish to submit a script to us please check out the submissions policy and process here

Hampstead Theatre programmes around a dozen new plays a year and commissions the very best writers to tell those stories. We have two spaces, a fully flexible main house which most recently has presented plays by Mike Bartlett, Simon Stephens, Mike Leigh, Nina Riane, Nicholas Wright and Steve Thompson, and an intimate studio space where we can experiment and explore new ideas that will hopefully become the main house plays of the future.

The Literary Department is a home for plays and writers. You fuel the work that we present on our stage, so please send us your plays, tell us the stories that we should be presenting and make your voice heard.
