A fun, hands-on workshop exploring how to start writing a musical. Using practical exercises, we will look at how characters sing and how you transition from scene into song. We will explore song function, song placement and the marrying of lyrics and music to tell the story.

Victoria Saxton is Executive Director of Mercury Musical Developments (MMD) and a visiting lecturer at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where she teaches Musical Theatre Writing to graduate students. She was a musical theatre submission reader for the National Theatre for many years and was part of creating their new Musical Theatre Writing Group.
Recent works include Marriage a La Mode (music by Charles Miller), which was performed at The London School of Musical Theatre (London) and Ophelia (music by Ella Grace) which received a production in Denmark in summer 2017 and was selected to be part of the PiTCH Festival in upstate New York. She is currently working on a radio play for Big Finish Productions as well as other musicals.
Sarah Travis' recent credits as Orchestrator and Music Supervisor include: Scrooge: Curve, A Little Night Music: Watermill Theatre, Sister Act (Curve and UK Tour), Grease and Legally Blonde (Curve) and Fiddler on The Roof (UK Tour). In 2006 she won a Tony and Drama Desk Award for her Orchestrations on the Watermill Theatre Production of Sweeney Todd.
As Composer: Pantomimes for Chipping Norton, The Secret Garden (Chester), The Marriage Of Figaro (Watermill), Peter Pan (Oxford Playhouse), A Star Danced (Watermill), The Last Fattybottypuss In The World (Regents Park) and Tales My Lover Told Me (Kings Head).
As Pianist she has accompanied Julian Clary, Lily Savage, Fascinating Aida, Issy van Randwyck and Barb Jungr.
Tim Sutton is currently MD for War Horse (UK Tour). Recent projects as composer include Titus Andronicus and The Two Noble Kinsmen (RSC), and Alexei Sayle’s Imaginary Sandwich Bar Series 1 & 2, (BBC R4).
He has worked as Musical Supervisor/Director on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Amen Corner (National Theatre), and Memphis (Shaftesbury Theatre).
He is currently writing Victory, a new musical, with playwright Juliet Gilkes-Romero.
