A CELEBRATION FOR COMMUNITY CREATES

Earlier this year more than 50 enthusiastic individuals from Hampstead’s local community came together to participate in weekly acting and playwriting sessions as part of the theatre’s Community Creates programme.

And now, their involvement has culminated with a day of celebrations. Last month we were delighted to present a public showcase featuring performances by 10 talented members of the acting programme alongside 17 brand new plays written by local residents and brought to life by a team of professional actors.

Thanks to the generous support of the Camden Council, the Community Creates programme is entirely free for all Camden residents.

One of the participants shared their thoughts about the experience: “This creative journey has been immensely rewarding – it’s been great for getting me out of my flat and great for my physical and mental well-being. Moreover, it has connected me to people and places I couldn’t have imagined and I absolutely intend to continue it.”

Jennifer Davis, Participation Director said “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate our most recent Community Creates programme than with a day of celebratory performances. It was a joy to see an enthusiastic group of people, many of whom were taking part in theatre for the first time, wholeheartedly embrace what is a wonderful creative and social opportunity.

Community Creates grew out of the success of the North Camden Zone resident-led programme, Hilgrove Creates. Inspired by Hilgrove Creates, Hampstead Theatre and North Camden Zone each led a successful ten-week pilot programme for the residents of the Chalcots and Hilgrove Estates.
