This in-depth exploration of the art of casting a production will examine the perspectives of producers, actors and casting director and reveal the dilemmas, compromises and commitment involved.
Edward Hall chairs a panel including award-winning actor Dave Johns, independent casting agent Susie Parriss, and playwright and actor Ella Road.
As Artistic Director of Hampstead Theatre, Edward Hall’s productions include Cell Mates; Filthy Business; Rabbit Hole; Wonderland; Sunny Afternoon (also West End/UK tour); Raving; Chariots of Fire (also West End); No Naughty Bits; Loyalty; Enlightenment and Firebird (Hampstead Downstairs/Trafalgar Studios). He is also Artistic Director of multi-award winning theatre company Propeller and his recent television credits include The Durrells; Partners in Crime, a six part series for the BBC; Restless; Downton Abbey and Spooks.
Dave Johns is one of the most respected and best loved comedians working on the British comedy circuit, having performed extensively in UK comedy clubs, and comedy clubs and festivals worldwide for nearly 3 decades. He is a frequent guest on much loved TV comedy shows such as Never Mindthe Buzzcocks, 8 Out of Ten Cats, Alan Davies As Yet Untitled, and The Football’s On. Dave is also a talented improvisor, making regular guest appearances with one of the longest running and highly acclaimed comedy improvisation teams, The Comedy Store Players appearing in their West End shows on many occasions. Dave has also appeared on the West End stage in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, alongside Christian Slater and performed in numerous plays at the Edinburgh Fringe.In 2016 Dave played the lead role in Ken Loach’s critically acclaimed and multi-award winning film I, Daniel Blake which won the much-coveted Palme D’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
Susie Parriss has worked as an independent casting director for more than 25 years in Films and Television on many award-winning dramas and series such as the original series of Poldark - which starred fellow panellist Christopher Biggins, Endeavour, Victoria, Christopher and his kind, the Invention of Hugo Cabret, Career Girls, Secrets and Lies. Susie is currently casting a new series Noughts And Crosses for the BBC.
Ella Road trained at The Oxford School of Drama after her English degree at Oxford University. Credits as an actor include jobs at the Soho Theatre, Globe and the Arcola, and screen work such as Joseph’s Reel, The Wyrd & Winter Ridge. Ella began writing mainly by playing about with poetry. Her first play The Phlebotomist will be staged at Hampstead Downstairs this spring. She is currently under commission from Theatre Royal Plymouth, and is beginning to develop work for screen.
